DESIGN & LAYOUT
The short answer

You can create a personal blog in WordPress without a plugin: choose a suitable theme, set your homepage, create your main pages, style the header and post layout, then publish posts with categories and featured images. A starter theme or demo import is the fast way to get the design in place.

What you need

  • A working WordPress website
  • Administrator access
  • A site name and short description
  • A logo or profile image, if you want one
  • Several blog post ideas and images

Choose the blog structure

Decide whether your homepage should show your latest posts or introduce you first. A simple personal blog usually needs a homepage, a posts page, an About page and a Contact page. Keep the top menu short so visitors can find your writing quickly.

Set your site title and tagline under the site identity controls. Choose a theme that shows post titles, dates, categories and featured images clearly rather than one that only looks good in its demo.

Create your core pages

Go to Pages and create your About and Contact pages. You can also add a dedicated Home page if you want an introduction, photograph, newsletter prompt or selected posts above the main feed.

Create a few focused categories under Posts, such as Travel, Food or Personal Notes. When writing a post, use the settings sidebar to assign a category, add an excerpt and set a featured image. Many themes use that featured image on the homepage or blog index.

Set the homepage and posts page

With a classic theme, open Settings > Reading and choose either Your latest posts or A static page. For a static layout, select your published Home page as the homepage and an empty page named Blog or Journal as the posts page. WordPress documents this as the standard way to separate an introduction from the post feed.

If you are using a block theme, check Appearance > Editor > Templates as well. A Front Page or Home template can control what visitors see and may take priority over the Reading screen. This is a common point of confusion when the page you edit does not match the page shown on the site.

Design it manually first

You do not need a plugin to design a personal blog. With a block theme, open Appearance > Editor, then use Styles to set the site-wide colours, typography and layout. Edit the header and footer through template parts, and adjust the Home, Blog Home, Single Post and Page templates to control the overall structure.

Use a Site Title or Site Logo block in the header, a Navigation block for the main menu and a Query Loop block for the post listing. You can also use patterns as starting points. The manual route is fine for a small blog, but it takes longer to make archive pages, single posts and mobile spacing look consistent. Changes to a template affect every post or page using it, so preview before saving.

Publish and check your posts

Write your first post under Posts > Add New. Add a clear title, short paragraphs, headings where useful, one relevant category, a featured image and descriptive alternative text. Set a readable permalink structure under Settings > Permalinks; the Post name option is usually easier for people to read and share. Save the settings after changing them.

Open the site in a private browser window and check the homepage, menu, category archives, single post, About page and Contact page on a phone. If comments are not part of your plan, review Settings > Discussion before publishing.

Use a starter design for speed

If you want the layout finished quickly, use LaFeminite as the starting theme. It is suited to lifestyle, travel and personal blogs, with responsive layouts, multiple blog designs, demo import and support for page builders such as Elementor and WPBakery.

Install the theme through Appearance > Themes, activate it, import the closest demo layout if available, then replace its text, images, logo, colours and menu with your own. Treat the imported content as a starting point: remove unused pages and posts, check the homepage setting, and review every template on mobile before launch.

Questions

Can I create a personal blog in WordPress without a plugin?
Yes, WordPress can create and style a personal blog without a plugin. A suitable theme provides the page templates, header, footer, navigation and post layout, while WordPress handles pages, posts, categories and featured images. Plugins are optional for extras such as forms, email subscriptions, analytics or advanced social sharing.
Should my homepage show posts or a welcome page?
Your homepage should show posts if publishing is the main purpose of the site and you want visitors to reach your latest writing immediately. Use a static welcome page if you need an introduction, biography, featured content or a clear route into several topics. You can assign a separate page as the posts page when using a static homepage.
Why does my homepage ignore the page I selected in Reading settings?
A block theme may be using its Home or Front Page template instead of the content of the page you selected. Open Appearance > Editor > Templates and inspect the relevant template. Check that it contains the layout you want, and remember that a template can control the front page for the whole site. Also make sure the page you want to use is published.
What should a personal blog menu include?
A personal blog menu normally needs Home, Blog or Journal, About and Contact. Add category links only when they represent useful sections that visitors may browse. Avoid putting every page in the header. If you use a block theme, edit the menu through the Navigation area or the Navigation block; you can reorder items and create submenus there.
What is the fastest way to design a personal blog?
The fastest route is to activate a blog-focused theme, import a starter layout, replace the demo content and then check the homepage, menu, post template and mobile view. LaFeminite is a suitable shortcut for lifestyle, travel and personal blogging because it includes responsive layouts, demo import and page-builder support. You still need to remove unwanted demo content and confirm that the correct homepage template is active.
