How to pay affiliates recurring commissions for subscriptions
AffiliateWP can track the first subscription payment, but recurring commissions need a recurring-referrals add-on or custom automation. The manual route is to match renewals to affiliates and record payments yourself; for regular renewals, use an integration that records each subscription payment automatically.
- 01Define your commission policy
- 02Choose the manual or automatic route
- 03Enable the commerce integration
- 04Install recurring referral tracking
- 05Handle existing subscriptions carefully
- 06Review and pay approved referrals
What you need
- WordPress with AffiliateWP installed
- A subscription or membership system with recurring payments
- Admin access to WordPress and your payment gateway
- A written commission and refund policy
Define your commission policy
Decide whether affiliates earn a percentage or flat amount on every renewal, whether commissions stop after a set number of payments, and whether refunds, failed payments, trials, upgrades and downgrades affect the amount.
Also choose a holding period before payment. Delaying payouts gives you time to handle refunds and chargebacks instead of paying commission on money you later have to recover.
Choose the manual or automatic route
For a small number of subscriptions, you can export renewal payments from your subscription system, match each customer to the referring affiliate, calculate the commission in a spreadsheet and pay affiliates through your normal payment method. Keep the renewal ID, customer, affiliate, amount, status and payment date in the ledger.
This route costs less in setup but is easy to miss when a renewal fails, a subscription changes plan or a refund arrives on a Friday. AffiliateWP by itself records the initial referral; it does not automatically create a new commission for every subscription renewal.
Enable the commerce integration
In AffiliateWP, open AffiliateWP » Settings » Integrations and enable the integration used by your subscription system. For WooCommerce, recurring commissions require WooCommerce Subscriptions as well as the recurring-referrals functionality. Supported systems also include Easy Digital Downloads, membership plugins, Gravity Forms and Stripe through WP Simple Pay.
Make sure the subscription system receives renewal notifications from the payment gateway. Stripe-based setups, for example, need the webhook configured for both test and live connections. If the gateway never tells WordPress that a renewal succeeded, no affiliate record can be created.
Install recurring referral tracking
Install and activate a recurring-referrals extension alongside AffiliateWP, then go to AffiliateWP » Settings » Commissions and enable recurring referrals. Once enabled, the supported integration can create a referral when a referred subscription renewal is recorded.
Set the global recurring rate and rate type. You can then override them for individual affiliates, and supported integrations such as WooCommerce can apply product-specific recurring rates or limits. Affiliate-specific rates take priority over product rates.
Handle existing subscriptions carefully
Subscriptions that existed before you enabled recurring tracking may need a parent referral created manually. For WooCommerce, use the original parent order ID, not the subscription ID, in the referral reference and use woocommerce as the context. The system can then associate future renewals with that affiliate.
This does not recreate commissions for renewals that already happened. Also, if a free trial creates a zero-value initial referral, do not enable the setting that ignores zero-amount referrals, because that record may be needed to identify the affiliate when the first paid renewal arrives.
Review and pay approved referrals
Run a test subscription and a test renewal, then check AffiliateWP » Referrals. Confirm the referral is linked to the correct affiliate, uses the expected rate, has the right currency and is not created twice. Test a failed payment, cancellation, refund and plan change before relying on the system.
When referrals have cleared your holding period, go to AffiliateWP » Payouts, preview the batch and pay affiliates through their configured methods. Manual payouts only record the payment, so use them when you have already sent the money outside WordPress.
Fast way: use AffiliateWP Recurring Referrals with your supported subscription integration, enable recurring referrals, set the global or affiliate-specific rate, then run a renewal test before processing a payout batch. It removes the monthly spreadsheet matching that makes the manual route unreliable.
Let AffiliateWP Recurring Referrals do it

Questions
- Can AffiliateWP pay commission on every subscription renewal?
- Yes, but recurring renewal commissions require the Recurring Referrals functionality and a supported subscription integration. AffiliateWP alone can record the initial referral, while the recurring setup links later payments to the original affiliate and creates additional referral records. Check that your subscription platform and payment gateway are supported before promising recurring payments to affiliates.
- Can I pay recurring affiliate commissions without a plugin?
- Yes, for a small programme you can export renewal transactions, match them to affiliates, calculate commissions in a spreadsheet and pay them manually. This does not provide automatic attribution, refund handling or reliable renewal records. Once you have regular renewals or many affiliates, a subscription-aware affiliate extension is safer because missed webhooks, plan changes and cancellations are difficult to reconcile by hand.
- Why did a subscription renewal not create an affiliate commission?
- The usual causes are a disabled recurring-referrals setting, an unsupported subscription integration, a missing payment-gateway webhook, no parent referral, or a renewal that happened before tracking was enabled. Free-trial subscriptions can also fail if zero-value initial referrals were discarded, because that record may be needed to identify the affiliate later.
- How do I set different recurring rates for different affiliates?
- Open the affiliate’s edit screen and set a custom recurring referral rate and rate type. That affiliate-level setting overrides the global recurring rate. With supported integrations, you can also set product-specific recurring rates or limits, but the affiliate-specific rate takes precedence over the product setting.
- Should I pay affiliates immediately after a renewal?
- Usually no. Set a commission holding period that covers your refund and chargeback window, then pay only approved referrals. Review failed renewals, cancellations, refunds and plan changes before running a payout batch. AffiliateWP supports delayed payouts and lets you preview a batch before money is sent, which helps prevent overpayments.
