How to let members keep access after canceling in WordPress

Membership & LMS Time About 30 minutes 6 steps Updated 30 Sep 2026

MEMBERSHIP & LMS
The short answer

WordPress cannot do this on its own. Your membership plugin must cancel the recurring payment while leaving the membership active until its next billing or expiry date. With Paid Memberships Pro 3.0 or later, this behaviour is built in, so members keep access through the period they already paid for.

What you need

  • A WordPress membership plugin connected to a payment gateway
  • A recurring membership level with a known next payment or expiry date
  • Administrator access to WordPress and the payment gateway
  • A test member account

Define the cancellation policy

Decide what cancellation means on your site. The usual policy is to stop the next renewal but keep the member’s access active until the end of the current paid period. Do not promise access through a date that your membership plugin cannot calculate.

Also decide how you will handle one-time memberships, refunds, failed payments and accounts without an active recurring subscription. These cases often need immediate cancellation or a separate manual expiry date.

Check your membership plugin

WordPress core does not manage membership access, recurring billing or end-of-term cancellations. Look in your membership plugin’s documentation for wording such as cancel at the end of the billing period, cancel on next payment date or keep access until expiry.

In Paid Memberships Pro, this behaviour is included in version 3.0 and later. A member who cancels a recurring membership has the payment subscription cancelled while the membership is set to expire on the next payment date.

Set up the member cancellation page

Make sure members can reach your membership plugin’s cancellation page from their account area. In Paid Memberships Pro, the page must contain the Membership Cancel block or the [pmpro_cancel] shortcode. The normal frontend cancellation flow stops recurring payments and sets the membership to expire on the next payment date when an active subscription exists.

Show the expiry date in the confirmation message or account area if your plugin supports it. This prevents a member from assuming that cancellation means immediate loss of access.

Handle admin cancellations carefully

For a cancellation requested by email, open the member’s record and cancel the recurring payment at the gateway. Then keep the membership active until the paid-through date, either by using your plugin’s end-of-term option or by setting a specific membership expiry date.

In Paid Memberships Pro, use Edit rather than immediately removing the membership if you want to preserve access through a chosen date. The separate subscription screen can cancel the gateway subscription without cancelling the membership, so do not treat those two actions as interchangeable.

Test the cancellation flow

Use a test member with a recurring subscription and cancel from the frontend. Confirm that the gateway will not charge again, the membership still shows as active or expiring, and the protected content remains available until the stated date.

Also test a member with no active subscription, a member who has already cancelled once, a failed payment and an admin-initiated cancellation. In Paid Memberships Pro, cancelling again after the subscription has already been cancelled can remove access immediately, and cancellations made through custom code or some API actions may bypass the delayed-cancellation flow.

Use Paid Memberships Pro for the fast route

If you are choosing a membership system or your current plugin lacks end-of-term cancellation, Paid Memberships Pro is the quickest route. Version 3.0 and later includes the former Cancel on Next Payment Date feature in the core plugin, so members can stop renewal while keeping access through their next scheduled payment date.

This is a good fit for sites that honour prepaid recurring subscriptions. You still need to verify the payment gateway connection and test the cancellation page before enabling it for members.

The fast route

Let Paid Memberships Pro do it

Keeps access active through the paid period after cancellation; ideal for Paid Memberships Pro sites honoring prepaid subscriptions.

Questions

Does WordPress support delayed membership cancellation by itself?
No. WordPress core has no membership expiry, subscription cancellation or payment-gateway logic. You need a membership or subscription plugin that can cancel future billing while retaining the member’s access until a stored expiry or next payment date. If your current plugin lacks that feature, you need an add-on, custom development or a different membership system.
What happens when a member has no recurring subscription?
A member without an active recurring subscription usually cannot be given an automatic next-payment cancellation date. Their access may be removed immediately unless you set a manual expiry date or use a fixed-length membership. Paid Memberships Pro documents this distinction: recurring memberships can expire on the next payment date, while non-recurring memberships are cancelled immediately through the normal frontend flow.
Should I cancel the subscription or the membership first?
Cancel the recurring payment and preserve the membership until the paid-through date. The exact order depends on the plugin, but cancelling only the gateway subscription may leave the membership active indefinitely, while removing the membership first can cut off access immediately. In Paid Memberships Pro, the subscription and membership are separate records, so check both after an admin cancellation.
Why did access end immediately after cancellation?
Immediate access removal usually means the membership had no active recurring subscription, the membership was removed instead of given an expiry date, the member cancelled twice, or custom code disabled delayed cancellation. Caching can also make the result look wrong. Check the subscription status, next payment date, membership expiry and any cancellation filters or custom code before changing the member manually.
Do I need an extra Paid Memberships Pro extension?
Not if you are using Paid Memberships Pro 3.0 or later, because Cancel on Next Payment Date was merged into the core plugin. Older versions used a separate add-on for this behaviour. Update carefully, confirm the gateway subscription data is present, and test the member-facing cancellation process before relying on it for live customers.
