How to track student grades in LearnPress
LearnPress can track course progress, quiz scores and pass or fail status through its built-in course and quiz settings. For a central gradebook with student-level reports and CSV exports, add LearnPress – Gradebook rather than checking each quiz separately.

What you need
- A WordPress site with LearnPress installed and activated
- Administrator or instructor access
- A published LearnPress course with enrolled test student
- A grading policy and passing percentage
Choose your grading method
Decide whether the course should be assessed by completed lessons, quizzes, or a final assessment. LearnPress course assessment settings support different evaluation methods, so choose one before recording results. If you want percentage scores, build those scores through quizzes rather than relying only on course completion.
Write down the passing percentage, number of attempts, and whether the highest or latest attempt should count. This prevents inconsistent results when students retake a quiz.
Set the course assessment
Open LearnPress > Courses, edit the course, and find its assessment settings. Set the passing requirement and select the evaluation method that matches your policy. LearnPress documentation describes assessment through course completion, tests, or homework.
Save the course and test it with a student account. A common problem is a progress value that stays at 0% because the course is set to evaluate through a final quiz while the student has only completed lessons.
Configure quiz scores
Go to LearnPress > Quiz and edit each quiz used for grading. Set the duration, passing grade, retake limit, question points, and any negative marking rules. LearnPress records quiz results for students, including passed and failed quizzes.
Check that every graded question has a point value and a correct answer. If questions are ungraded or the quiz is not assigned to the course curriculum, the result will not represent the score you expect.
Review results manually
For a small class, use the built-in records: open a student profile to review their quiz results, then open the relevant course and quiz records to check progress and scores. The student-facing profile includes a Quiz Results area showing quizzes taken and whether they passed.
This manual route is fine for a few students and automatic quizzes. Its drawback is that LearnPress does not give you a convenient central gradebook for comparing every student, combining several assessments, applying custom grading scales, or exporting a complete class report.
Protect existing records
Be careful when changing course assessment settings, assigning courses, or resetting progress. LearnPress tools can reset course, user, or item progress, and assigning or removing a course can erase the user’s existing progress for that course.
Before making a major change, export or record the current results and test the change with a separate student account. Do not use the reset tools on a live course unless you intend to remove the stored progress.
Add a central gradebook
For the faster route, install and activate LearnPress – Gradebook. It adds a central student overview, course-level result views, progress tracking, charts, and CSV export. Its documentation places the student overview at LearnPress > Gradebook > Student Overview, where you can open a student and then select a course to inspect the detailed result.
Use the add-on when you need grading scales, reports, notifications, or a repeatable export process. It is the practical choice once checking individual quiz records becomes too slow.
Let LearnPress do it
Adds grading scales, progress reports, notifications, and CSV exports when LearnPress’s built-in tracking is not enough.
Questions
- Can LearnPress track grades without an add-on?
- Yes, LearnPress can track quiz results, passing status and course progress without a gradebook add-on. You configure the course assessment, assign quizzes to the curriculum, set question points and review the student’s quiz results. The limitation is that the built-in route is spread across course and quiz records, so it becomes awkward for larger classes or multiple assessments.
- Why does a student’s LearnPress progress show 0%?
- A 0% value often means the course is configured to evaluate through a final quiz rather than completed lessons. Check the course’s assessment or evaluation setting, save the course, and test again with a student account. Also confirm that the student is enrolled and that lessons or quizzes are actually marked complete rather than merely viewed.
- Where can students see their LearnPress quiz grades?
- Students can see quiz results in the Quiz Results area of their LearnPress profile. This area shows quizzes they have taken and whether each result passed or failed. The exact information displayed depends on the quiz settings and the LearnPress version, so test the result page with a normal student account before promising students a particular report.
- Does LearnPress have a built-in class gradebook?
- LearnPress provides course progress and quiz-result records, but a central class gradebook with consolidated reports and CSV exports requires the Gradebook add-on. Without it, you generally inspect students and assessments separately. That manual approach works for a small course, but it is slow when you need to compare students, review several quizzes, or keep downloadable records.
- Will resetting LearnPress progress delete grades?
- Yes, resetting course, user, or item progress can remove stored progress and results. Assigning or unassigning a course can also erase the user’s existing progress for that course. Record or export the current results before using these tools, and test changes on a separate account first if the course already has active students.
