How to offer group discounts for WordPress memberships

Membership & LMS Time About 30 minutes 6 steps Updated 10 Oct 2026

MEMBERSHIP & LMS
The short answer

WordPress does not provide group membership discounts by itself. If your membership plugin supports discount codes, create one limited-use code for the organisation; for unique, trackable codes at scale, use a group discount add-on. A coupon alone does not create multiple member accounts.

  2. 02Set up the membership level
  3. 03Create one shared code manually
  4. 04Test the checkout rules
  5. 05Track the group sign-ups

What you need

  • A WordPress membership plugin with discount-code support
  • Admin access to WordPress
  • A defined membership level and group offer
  • A payment gateway configured for membership checkout

Decide what the group needs

First decide whether the group will share one discount code, receive one code per person, or have one organisation pay for several member accounts. These are different workflows.

A discount code changes checkout pricing. It does not automatically create several users, connect them to an organisation, or let one buyer manage other members. If one purchaser must sponsor multiple accounts, look for a group-account or bulk-enrolment feature as well.

Set up the membership level

Create or edit the membership level that the group will buy. Set the normal initial payment, recurring amount, billing cycle, and expiry before adding the discount.

Write down the exact level the offer applies to. A common mistake is creating a valid code but forgetting to attach pricing for the intended level, so the code appears to work while changing nothing.

Create one shared code manually

If the group is trusted and a shared code is acceptable, use your membership plugin's discount-code screen to create one code. Set its start and end dates, attach it to the correct membership level, and choose either a fixed amount or a replacement initial and recurring price where supported. Set a maximum number of uses if the offer is limited.

Send the code privately to the organisation. This route is often enough for a club or small employer, but a shared code can be forwarded and is harder to attribute to individual recipients. Check whether the code applies to recurring payments as well as the first payment before publishing it.

Test the checkout rules

Open a private or incognito window and test the membership checkout as a new visitor. Confirm that the code is accepted for the intended level, the initial total is correct, and any recurring amount is what you promised.

Also test an expired code, an incorrect level, and the use limit. Do not assume a percentage discount will work: some membership systems use replacement prices or fixed amounts instead. If the code is meant to be invitation-only, require a valid code before checkout with a documented membership-plugin setting or a carefully maintained customisation.

Track the group sign-ups

Record the organisation name, code, agreed limit, expiry date, membership level, and contact person in your own campaign sheet. In the membership dashboard, review orders or discount-code usage to see which registrations used the offer.

Keep the parent offer and campaign records while the memberships are active. If a group member asks for a refund or an extension, you will need to identify the order rather than rely on an email thread. Membership systems can track code use, but they do not replace your campaign records.

Issue unique codes faster

For a large group, create a parent discount with the pricing, expiry, membership-level restrictions, and overall rules, then generate a different child code for each recipient. Give each person only their own code and keep the parent code private.

The fast route is Paid Memberships Pro with its Group Discount Codes add-on. It generates multiple unique codes that share parent settings and lets you monitor the campaign through the parent code. Install and activate Paid Memberships Pro, install the add-on, open the discount-code management screen, add one code per line or generate them, then test one child code before sending the list. This is for separate sign-ups; use a group-account feature if one purchaser must administer several accounts.

Questions

Can I offer a group discount without a plugin?
You can offer a shared discount without adding another plugin if your existing membership system already supports coupon or discount codes. WordPress core has no membership pricing or group-discount system, so you would otherwise need custom code and manual account handling. A spreadsheet can track recipients, but it will not validate codes or change checkout prices.
Should everyone in the group use the same code?
Use one shared code only when the group is trusted and simple reporting is enough. A shared code is easy to create but can be forwarded and does not identify each recipient. Use unique, single-use codes when you need better control, individual tracking, or a way to stop one person from consuming the whole allocation.
Does a group discount create several membership accounts?
No, a discount code normally changes the price for one checkout; it does not create several WordPress users or assign them to an organisation. If one buyer pays for multiple people, you need a group-account, sponsored-membership, or bulk-enrolment workflow in addition to the pricing discount.
How do I stop a group discount being shared publicly?
Use an expiry date, a total use limit, and, where possible, one-use-per-user or unique codes. Send codes privately and avoid publishing them on a public page. For stronger control, require a valid code before the relevant membership level can be purchased and review the associated orders regularly.
