How to connect LearnDash courses to a social learning community
LearnDash does not natively sync course enrolments, completions, and lesson activity with a social community. You can link course pages to community groups manually, but automatic group membership and activity feeds require an integration plugin or custom development.
- 01Choose your course-to-community model
- 02Prepare the community and test users
- 03Connect courses manually first
- 04Enable course activity sharing
- 05Link each course to its group
- 06Test the complete learner journey
- 07Use the integration for speed
What you need
- A WordPress site with LearnDash installed
- A social community plugin such as PeepSo
- Administrator access
- A staging site or recent backup
- At least one test learner account
Choose your course-to-community model
Decide whether each LearnDash course gets its own community group, or whether several related courses share one group. A one-course-to-one-group model is easier to explain to learners, while a shared group suits a membership or cohort community.
Keep the two access systems separate in your plan: LearnDash controls course access, while the community controls profiles, discussions, and group visibility. Do not assume that enrolling someone in a course also makes them a member of a social group unless an integration is configured to do that.
Prepare the community and test users
Install and configure your social community first. Create the groups learners will use, set their visibility, add moderators, and decide whether learners can post files, comments, and links.
Create one administrator test account and one learner account. Test with the learner account rather than an administrator account, because administrators can bypass permissions and make a broken connection look correct.
Connect courses manually first
The manual route is fine for a small site. Create a community group for each course, then add a clear link to that group from the course page, course navigation, welcome email, or learner dashboard. Add learners to the group yourself after enrolment, or give them a documented join link if the group is open.
LearnDash can show a learner’s enrolled courses and progress through its profile tools, but this route does not automatically publish course completions to the community, add learners to groups, or keep membership in sync. Those tasks become repetitive and error-prone as enrolments grow.
Enable course activity sharing
For automatic activity feeds, install a LearnDash-to-community integration that supports your social platform. In PeepSo, the LMS settings are under PeepSo > Configuration > LMS. Enable only the activity types you want, such as enrolments, course completion, lesson completion, topic completion, quiz completion, or certificates, and edit the activity wording if needed.
Members can usually control their own learning-activity sharing from their PeepSo preferences. Tell learners what will be visible before enabling public completion posts.
Link each course to its group
With PeepSo Groups active, edit a LearnDash course and use the PeepSo Groups section in the course editor. Set related groups for discovery, an auto-join group for enrolment-based membership, and a default activity group for course updates.
These are different settings. A related group can be displayed without adding a learner to it, while an auto-join group handles membership and the default activity group receives course activity. Course-to-group linking depends on the Groups add-on being active and on the learner being allowed to access the group.
Test the complete learner journey
Run the process from a clean learner account: enrol in the course, confirm course access, check whether the learner is added to the intended group, complete a lesson, pass a quiz, and complete the course. Check both the member activity stream and the group activity stream.
If nothing appears, check the Groups add-on, the course’s group links, the learner’s group permissions, and the member’s learning-activity preferences. Also check whether your theme has copied old PeepSo templates. Integration CSS and JavaScript may load only on course and profile pages, so do not treat their absence on unrelated pages as a fault.
Use the integration for speed
For a working social learning community without maintaining custom code, use PeepSo LearnDash Integration. It connects LearnDash course activity with PeepSo profiles and streams, and supports course-to-group relationships, auto-join groups, related groups, and activity posts for learning milestones. It requires PeepSo, LearnDash, and the PeepSo Groups add-on for group-linking features.
The manual route remains reasonable for a small catalogue with a few learners. Choose the integration when you need automatic enrolment-to-group membership, shared progress updates, or several courses and cohorts that would be difficult to manage by hand.
Let PeepSo LearnDash Integration do it
Adds course activity feeds, groups, chat, profiles, and achievement sharing for community-driven LearnDash learning.

Questions
- Does LearnDash connect to a social community by itself?
- No. LearnDash manages courses, enrolments, lessons, quizzes, progress, and groups, but it does not natively provide a social activity stream or automatically synchronise course activity with a community platform. You can add links and manage group membership manually, or use an integration plugin or custom code for automatic synchronisation.
- Can I connect one LearnDash course to more than one community group?
- Yes, supported integrations can let you assign different group relationships to a course. For example, you can mark groups as related for discovery, choose an auto-join group for enrolled learners, and select one default activity group for course updates. The exact options depend on the community integration and its Groups add-on.
- Why are learners not being added to the community group?
- The usual causes are that the community Groups add-on is inactive, the course has no auto-join group configured, or the learner cannot access the selected group. Check the course’s group settings and test with a normal learner account. Existing members may also need to be checked separately if you changed the course-to-group settings after enrolments were already made.
- Can learners opt out of course activity posts?
- Usually, yes. In the PeepSo LMS integration, site administrators enable activity types globally, while individual members can opt out from their PeepSo preferences under Learning Activity. Explain this behaviour to learners so they understand which completions may appear in their profile or community feed.
- Is the manual method good enough for a small course site?
- Yes, if you have few courses and are comfortable adding learners to groups yourself. Link each course to its community group and document where learners should discuss the material. The manual method becomes unsuitable when you need automatic group membership, completion posts, quiz updates, or reliable synchronisation across many courses and enrolments.</
