How to get lifetime updates for WordPress products
WordPress cannot grant lifetime updates by itself. You need a product licence that includes perpetual update access, then activate it on your site and update through the vendor’s updater or by uploading each new ZIP manually. A multi-product lifetime upgrade is the faster route when several products need coverage.

What you need
- A WordPress site with administrator access
- The product ZIP file or access to the vendor account
- A licence that explicitly includes lifetime or perpetual updates
- A current backup of the site
Check what lifetime means
Log in to the product vendor’s account and check the licence details. Confirm that lifetime access covers updates, not only the current download or support period. The entitlement is controlled by the vendor’s licence server; WordPress has no setting that can convert an annual licence into a lifetime one.
Also check the number of sites or domains allowed. A licence may provide lifetime updates but still limit activation to one site or a fixed number of installations.
Back up before updating
Take a backup of the database and files before replacing a premium plugin or theme. WordPress recommends keeping a current backup because an update can fail or expose a compatibility problem. For an important site, update a staging copy first and check the front end, forms, checkout and logged-in areas.
Activate the product licence
Install the product, then open its settings or licence screen in the WordPress dashboard. Paste the licence key or connect the vendor account, save it, and use the screen’s activation or verification control if one is provided. The label and menu location vary by product.
After activation, return to Dashboard > Updates or Plugins. Premium products normally need their own built-in updater before WordPress can display update notices; externally installed products only show notices when the author supplies that updater.
Use the manual update route
The manual route is fine for an occasional update or when the vendor updater is unavailable. Download the latest ZIP from the vendor account, keep your backup, then go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin and upload it. If WordPress offers to replace the installed version, confirm only after checking that the ZIP is for the same product.
For a theme, upload it through the Themes screen or use SFTP if the dashboard cannot write files. This updates the files you already possess, but it does not create lifetime access or notify you about future releases. WordPress documents dashboard uploads and SFTP as the standard alternatives.
Turn on automatic updates
Once the licence is active and the product exposes an update to WordPress, enable its automatic update control from Plugins or Appearance. WordPress can run scheduled updates, but the product still needs to return a valid download to the site.
If automatic updates are missing, the vendor updater may not be active, your licence may not be recognised, or your host may have disabled the feature. WordPress relies on scheduled tasks for automatic updates, so check Tools > Site Health if updates never run.
Fix missing update notices
Check the licence key, connected account, registered domain and entitlement first. A development domain that was later replaced by the live domain often remains attached to the licence, so deactivate or release the old site in the vendor account and activate the live one.
If the update says “unauthorised”, “forbidden” or “download failed”, re-save or reconnect the licence, then use Dashboard > Updates > Check again. If the licence is valid but the notice still does not appear, download the ZIP manually. File permissions, a full disk, blocked outbound requests and a recently renewed entitlement are common causes of failed updates.
Choose the fast route
If you only need one product and already have a perpetual licence, activation plus WordPress’s normal updater is enough. If you want lifetime coverage for several products, Lifetime Updates is the faster route: one account upgrade extends update access across 4–6 products, so you avoid repeating separate renewals and licence activations.
It still does not replace backups, compatibility checks or the vendor’s activation rules. Confirm which products and sites are included before applying the upgrade.
Let Lifetime Updates do it
Extends update access for 4–6 products in one account upgrade, useful when you want to avoid recurring renewals.

Questions
- Can WordPress provide lifetime updates by itself?
- No. WordPress can install and schedule updates, but the product vendor controls access to premium download files and update services. You need a licence or account entitlement that explicitly includes lifetime updates. Without that entitlement, you can still upload a ZIP manually when you have one, but WordPress cannot generate future product releases or grant access to them.
- Do lifetime updates include support and new major versions?
- Not necessarily. Lifetime updates usually refer to access to released product updates, while support, installation help and major-version upgrades may have separate terms. Read the vendor’s licence details and check whether the entitlement applies to all versions, a particular product line or only the sites assigned to the licence. Do not assume “lifetime” means unlimited activations or support.
- Why is my premium plugin not showing an update?
- The usual causes are an inactive or expired licence, the wrong domain attached to the licence, a disconnected vendor account, or a vendor updater that has not been installed or activated. Reconnect the licence, save it again and check Dashboard > Updates. If the product was installed from an external ZIP and has no built-in updater, WordPress will not show notices automatically; download the latest ZIP from the vendor instead.
- Can I update manually without activating the licence?
- You can manually replace the files if you have a legitimate current ZIP, but manual installation does not provide lifetime access. You will not receive future downloads or automatic notices unless the vendor grants update entitlement and the product’s updater can verify it. Back up first, then use Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin or SFTP when the dashboard upload is unavailable.
