How to issue course certificates in LearnPress

The short answer

LearnPress does not provide the certificate builder and automatic issuing workflow in the core LMS. Use the Certificates add-on to create a branded template, assign it to a course, and let students receive a PDF or image after they complete the course.

The route
  1. 01Confirm course completion rules
  2. 02Install a certificates add-on
  3. 03Create and publish the certificate
  4. 04Choose the delivery settings
  5. 05Assign it to the course
  6. 06Test the learner journey

What you need

  • LearnPress installed and configured
  • Administrator access to WordPress
  • A completed course with lessons and completion rules
  • A certificate design or branding assets

Confirm course completion rules

Open the course in LearnPress → Courses and check that its lessons, quizzes, and passing requirements are correct. Students must reach LearnPress's recorded completion state before the certificate can be issued.

Test the final lesson as a student account and confirm that the course shows as complete. A student who has viewed every lesson but has not clicked the final completion control, or has not passed a required quiz, may not receive a certificate.

Install a certificates add-on

LearnPress's documented certificate workflow uses a separate Certificates add-on. Install the add-on from Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, or use the installation method supplied with your LearnPress licence, then activate it.

Without an add-on, your fallback is manual: design a PDF in another tool, check each student's completion record, and email or upload the certificate yourself. That can be fine for a small class, but it does not automatically personalise, issue, or store certificates in the student's LearnPress account.

Create and publish the certificate

Go to LearnPress → Certificates → Add New. Enter an internal title, then start with a blank design or choose a built-in template. Add dynamic elements such as the student name, course title, instructor name, course dates, and completion date.

Upload your logo, signature, seal, or background if needed. Preview the result, check that long names fit, and click Publish. Leaving the certificate as a draft is a common reason it cannot be selected from a course.

Choose the delivery settings

Open LearnPress → Settings → Certificates. Choose whether students download certificates as PDF files or images, and enable the certificate popup if you want the certificate to appear immediately after course completion. You can also adjust the certificate link text and social-sharing options where available.

PDF is usually the better choice for printing and formal records. Preview both the on-screen version and the downloaded file because fonts, backgrounds, and spacing can render differently.

Assign it to the course

Edit the course under LearnPress → Courses, open its course settings, and use the certificate assignment control to select the published certificate. If you need a new design, use the option to add a new certificate from the course editor, then return to the course and select it.

Save or update the course after assigning the certificate. The official instructions specifically warn that the course must be updated, and the certificate is then made available when the student completes the course.

Test the learner journey

Use a separate student account to enrol in the course, complete every required lesson or quiz, and finish the course. Confirm that the certificate appears after completion, that the student's name and course title are correct, and that the PDF or image download works.

If the certificate is missing, first check that the add-on is active, the certificate is published, the correct certificate is assigned, and the course was updated afterwards. If a certificate link returns a 404, save the certificate settings and re-save your WordPress permalink settings to refresh rewrite rules. Older add-on release notes identify unsaved settings and rewrite rules as causes of certificate 404 errors.

Questions

Can LearnPress issue certificates without a plugin?
Not automatically. LearnPress's documented certificate builder and course-completion issuing workflow is provided by the Certificates add-on, not by the basic LMS alone. Without it, you can create certificates elsewhere and send them manually after checking each student's completion record, but LearnPress will not automatically generate and store the personalised credential for you.
Where do I create a LearnPress certificate?
Create one under LearnPress → Certificates → Add New. You can start with a blank canvas or a built-in template, then add dynamic fields such as the student name, course title, instructor, and completion date. Publish the certificate before trying to assign it to a course.
How do I attach a certificate to a LearnPress course?
Edit the course under LearnPress → Courses, open the course settings, choose the certificate assignment control, select a published certificate, and update the course. Students receive access after LearnPress records that they have met the course completion conditions.
Why is a completed student's certificate not showing?
A missing certificate usually means the course was not actually marked complete, the certificate is still a draft, no certificate is assigned to the course, or the course was not updated after assignment. Also check that the Certificates add-on is active. For a 404 certificate link, save the certificate settings and refresh WordPress permalink rules, since older add-on notes identify rewrite rules as a known cause.
What is the fastest way to issue LearnPress certificates?
Install the LearnPress Certificates Add-on, create or select a template, enable PDF downloads in LearnPress → Settings → Certificates, and assign the published certificate from the course editor. The add-on then generates a personalised certificate after the learner completes the course, avoiding manual PDF creation and emailing.
